Why Mallinckrodt Got Crushed - Barron's. It was a down day for the stock market.

The selloff by the Dow Industrials notwithstanding, Mallinckrodt (MNK) got manhandled after losing its bid to block Praxair (PX)  from marketing a generic version of  the respiratory treatment Inomax. The court ruled invalidated Mallinckrodt’s patents, and sent the stock plunging more than 1. That kind of dramatic price move suggests that the market fears that Inomax sales could fall off a cliff.. But BMO Capital Markets analyst Gary Nachman says the court’s decision “comes as a surprise given previous positive IPR decisions.” Mallinckrodt has indicated it has strong grounds for an appeal, says Nachman and a number of questions remain, a big one being whether Praxair can get its generic version of Inomax approved. It's unclear why Praxair has struggled to get its generic approved, although it has had some issues with the device (FDA's decision was expected in June/July). Mallinckrodt thought the judge wouldn't rule until Praxair had an approved product, so it was very surprised by the decision's timing (perhaps Praxair provided the judge some clarity on that timeline). Mallinckrodt was also surprised with the decision given its previous successes with these patents in the IPR process and believes it has very solid grounds for appeal.

Nachman notes that Mallinckrodt faced other headwinds heading into today’s court decision.. Unfortunately, this news on Inomax comes at a time when investors are already concerned about the durability of Mallinckrodt's portfolio and concentration risk with Acthar. This only adds to those concerns. Thus, while we continue to believe the stock is undervalued, we acknowledge investor sentiment could be challenged for a while. Based on recent investor meetings, however, we expect management to consider more aggressive ways to try and unlock shareholder value.
