It is also apparent in Bertolucci's cinematic style, which is so rich, poetic, and baroque that it is simply incapable of meaning only what it says—and which is, I think, a decided improvement over Moravia's sometimes tiresomely lean prose. The movie, based on the first screenplay that Bertolucci has written without collaborators since Before the Revolution, is a series of nonsequential memories that are evoked in Marcello's mind as he and another Italian Fascist, a trigger man, drive through snowy French landscapes to attend the assassination of an exiled anti- Fascist who was once Marcello's philosophy professor. The time is 1. 93.

Marcello, pursued by the guilt of the attempted homosexual seduction when he was twelve (and which was climaxed by his shooting the man), has in turn pursued the illusion of adequacy. He has loved, courted, and married a girl (Stefania Sandrelli) so commonplace as to be unique and he has given the Fascists such dedication that he doesn't hesitate to combine his honeymoon to Paris with an assignment to murder his former professor. The movie is full of such curious coexistences, some of which align good alongside evil and others that reinforce or echo major themes. At one point, Marcello's blind friend,  another staunch Fascist, points out (none too subtly, perhaps) that they are alike, that kind gravitates toward kind. This later gives a most peculiar perspective to Marcello's sudden infatuation with the professor's young wife, Anna, played by Dominique Sanda (La Femme Douce). Although Anna responds to him, it is almost immediately revealed that she is head over heels in love with Marcello's absurd wife. Bertolucci will be faulted, I expect, for his rather loving depiction of all of the very photogenic details of upper  middle- class decadence.

It does get to be a bit much when Marcello goes to call on his mother and finds her in bed, asleep, at noon, wearing a feathered bedjacket, a mask over her eyes, and waiting for a morphine fix to be administered by her Japanese chauffeur. At the news conference following the showing of the film Thursday, Bertolucci said that the difference between his film and Visconti's The Damned is that The Damned is operatic, while his film is operettic, which is, in a way, quite right.) There are excesses in the film, but they are balanced by scenes of such unusual beauty and vitality that I couldn't care less. I think particularly of a scene in which Marcello and his mother visit his father in the courtyard of a mental hospital that looks very much like a surreal Greek market- place. It could be Oedipus and Jocasta come to call on a crazy Laius. There is another, absolutely marvelous sequence in a Parisian dance hall in which Anna and Marcello's wife dance a funny, more or less sapphic, tango. The movie is perfectly cast, from Trintignant and on down, including Pierre Clementi, who appears briefly as the wicked young man who makes a play for the young Marcello.
